The Top Three Things I Wish I Had Known Before Becoming A Coach

Hi. I’m Kara.

I’m a graduate of Harvard and Yale, a former women’s rights lawyer, and now a Master Certified Life Coach.

And I’ve made $25,000,000 coaching without ever selling weight loss, business coaching, or any of the other easy-money niches that rely on the false hope of miracle fixes or get-rich quick schemes.

How? Not because I was a natural entrepreneur or have a PhD in psychology, I’ll tell you that much.

In fact, when I first became a life coach, I had no idea what I was doing.

Honestly, it had taken me a few years to even accept that being a life coach was a real thing. I was half-convinced it was a pyramid scheme. 😂

I had no relevant academic experience. While I had started out wanting to major in Psychology, I had graduated as an English major, with a Creative Writing Concentration no less!

I had never taken a marketing or business class. Between you and me, I had never even balanced my checkbook.

I did have a graduate degree – but it was a law degree, and I had spent my legal career in constitutional law. Not super relevant to life coaching.

I walked into my coach certification in March 2015.

Now, a decade later, I’m a Master Certified Coach, with a team of seven employees at The School for New Feminist Thought, and together we’ve created $25,000,000 in revenue over the lifetime of my busines.

I have a New York Times-bestselling book called Take Back Your Brain, a top-ranked podcast called UnF*ck Your Brain, and a membership program, the Feminist Self-Help Society, with thousands of women in it.

Needless to say, I learned a LOT on the way from there to here.

But I did not learn most of it wisely and gracefully. 🙃

There was a lot of fumbling. A lot of flailing. A lot of mental drama.

“I am embracing the invitation to question all of it…”

I always thought that I’d start my own coaching business “someday.” I never felt true certainty about what kind of coaching business I wanted to create, until I went through a coach training program with Kara.

I love recognizing that the “rules” for a coaching business were really just made up by someone at some point (and that they were probably made up by a white guy who didn’t have an intersectional-feminist point of view).

I am embracing the invitation to question all of it and make choices that I believe best serve my clients and me.

Looking back, there are three absolutely crucial concepts that have contributed to my success today that I wish I had known when I started.

These three principles would have saved me so much time and stress if someone had just shared them with me at the beginning!
But alas, I had not written this guide in 2015.

I’ve written it now though. So that you can take the shortcut — instead of the long way round — to success.

The three lessons in this guide apply at every stage of your journey.

They make the difference between never starting and hitting the ground running.

They make the difference between giving  up when it gets hard and persevering until you succeed.

They make the difference between plateauing at “good-enough” and growing beyond your wildest dreams.

These are the principles I’ll be using in my second decade in this career to go from well-known to a global name, to go from $25,000,000 to $100,000,000, to go from thousands of lives changed to a million women inspired to transform.

It’s my honor and joy to share them with you to inspire and support you on your journey too.

I know these three principles will help you make the difference you want to make in the world with a lot less brain drama.

The world needs coaches.

The world needs our work.

The world needs your specific perspective, your experiences, your special sauce.

Even if you don’t know that yet, I do. And I want to help you get there.

Praise for my coach trainings:

You’ve elevated my work as a coach and increased my ability to make change within my niche. And most importantly (to me) you created the first place since kindergarten that I can recall feeling completely comfortable being myself, being curious, and knowing other people would understand what I was talking about. That is priceless.

I understand coaching in a way that I was unable to before learning from Kara. I can recognize patterns in my clients with their thinking, what they fear and where they’re holding back and now I know why. This deeper understanding of the patriarchy and internalized oppression has made me one thousand times more effective. Prior to this, it felt like I was coaching on the surface and now I can recognize the deeper cause of their issues.

After I started implementing this prospective a client said to me: “Where did you learn how to be a therapist? Because I’ve been in and out of therapy and I’ve never done it like this.

— Katy

What Kara has to offer is so rich. It affected my whole way of thinking and being and therefore doing, and I know that I’ll be implementing things that were born of learning from her for many years to come.
