We are continuing the theme of burnout because it looks like pretty much 100% of the world is going through it right now. I’m here today with two more of my Advanced Certification in Feminist Coaching students, Marissa and Ali, and we’re discussing the root causes of burnout, from gender-based socialization to parenthood, and our worth being tied to our productivity.

This week, I’m interviewing my ACFC students, Tina Koch and Rachèle Summers. Tina is a mentor for people in the performing arts and a feminist anti-ableism coach who helps people understand and unlearn internalized ableism. Rachèle is an Advanced Certified life and confidence coach for working moms who are close to burnout, and they’re on the show today to discuss all things burnout, productivity, and ableism.

If you’re a regular listener here, you’ll be familiar with the concept of the mental load and invisible logistical labor women and people of other marginalized identities experience. The solution I’ve previously offered here on the podcast is that women need to get comfortable with relinquishing control and perfection, essentially letting the ball drop sometimes.

If, like me, your work lies in changing hearts and minds, the truth is you’re going to have to seek out hearts and minds that don’t always agree with you. We want to be accepted, safe, and feel a sense of belonging, even while we’re changing people’s worldviews. But what’s the cost of trying to maintain belonging and a shared identity above what you feel called to create?

One thing we know for sure is that our brains are predictive machines. It likes to generalize from one instance and turn it into an all-encompassing, all-consuming state of being. But our thoughts are temporary. They’re like clouds that float across the sky, and one cloud doesn’t define the sky forever. And the same is true when it comes to your thoughts and other people’s thoughts.
